The PCE at 100: a century of the Communist Party of Spain
Members of the PCE living in Britain look back at the struggle against Franco, the guerilla resistance and clandestine years under fascism, the decline in support due to Eurocommunism and its current rebirth as a party of government with two ministers in parliament

Origin and early years

Our history starts in October 1917 with the triumph of the Bolsheviks in Russia and the change that this important event brought to the working class around the world. The effect of this in Spain was  the creation in 1920 of the Spanish Communist Party by members of the Socialist Youth who decided to join the Communist International.

Shortly after, in the context of an extraordinary congress of the Spanish Socialist Workers Party (Partido Socialista Obrero Espanol — PSOE) of 1921, a sector of the party split, founding the Spanish Communist Workers Party. Both the Spanish Communist Party and the Spanish Communist Workers Party were combined and created the Communist Party of Spain (Partido Comunista de Espana — PCE) in November 1921.
