EILEEN TURNBULL looks at the similarities between two struggles for justice, three centuries apart

WHEN asked to write about the Shrewsbury pickets for the Diggers Festival I started to think about what both had in common. 

I soon realised that it was about fairness, equality and sharing for the benefit of the many, not the few. 

Gerrard Winstanley who, with others, formed the True Levellers during the English Civil War, was born in Wigan in 1609. Harry Chadwick, a carpenter, has been a lifelong trade unionist in Wigan throughout his working life. He is the chairperson of the Shrewsbury 24 Campaign.
