Hunger striker Ozkan Ozdemir

I AM 42 years old. I am a member of the European Confederation of Oppressed Immigrants, which is an umbrella organisation of refugee organisations serving mainly Turkish and Kurdish people living or working in different European countries, including the UK.

For many years, I worked in the voluntary sector of London as an interpreter, development worker, project manager and for the betterment of social, political and economic life of refugees and asylum-seekers.

I have started an indefinite hunger strike in Cologne, Germany, I later moved to Paris due to the importance of France in determining the politics of the EU.

Why did you personally join the hunger strikes?

How many days have you been on hunger strike and how do you feel?

How many of you are there on hunger strike and what support are you getting?

PKK [Kurdistan Workers Party] leader Abdullah Ocalan met his lawyers last week but the hunger strikes are continuing. Why?

What impact do you think the hunger strikes are having?

People in prison have no other option but to use their bodies and go on hunger strike. For those outside it is different, there are other options and forms of protest. Why are people not in jail joining the hunger strike?
