Men’s Football Fulham take advantage of a tired Burnley side to pick up first win of the season

A FEAST of goals at Craven Cottage saw Fulham pick up their first win of the season today in a pulsating end-to-end affair.

Sean Dyche’s Burnley arrived at Fulham after a tough Europa League away defeat in Athens against Olympiacos on Thursday night and seemed to be suffering a hangover in the opening minutes as Fulham took an early lead.

A fine move down the left involving Joe Bryan and Luchiano Vietto ended with Jean Michael Seri rifling into the top corner from 25 yards.

Fulham made five changes to the side that lost to Tottenham last time out, with Ryan Sessegnon relegated to the bench and long-term goalkeeper Marcus Bettinelli back in the net. And their early season defensive frailty was on show when they let in an equaliser after 10 minutes.

A poor pass by Maxime Le Marchand on the halfway line saw Burnley break forward quickly, with Aaron Lennon finding Jeff Hendrick at the edge of the six-yard box and the Burnley striker scored with his second attempt.

Fulham retook the lead on 25 minutes with a corner straight from the training ground. Seri found Tom Cairney on the edge of the box who curled a cross to the far post where Aleksandar Mitrovic was waiting to head home.

Two minutes later and Mitrovic doubled Fulham’s lead with a header from six yards out from Vietto’s cross. Joe Hart had no chance as Burnley’s defence fell asleep.

Burnley responded immediately with a corner move of their own, a goal that VAR may well have ruled out as James Tarkowski looked to be in an offside position when meeting Ben Mee’s nod-down.

The second half was just as open, with both sides pushing for the crucial goal. Fulham had the better of the chances and wrapped up the game in the 83rd minute after superb play from Mitrovic on the right wing.

The Serbian international cut inside and saw his curling shot touched onto the post by Hart and on the rebound German World Cup winner Andre Schurrle scored the goal that his all-round play deserved.
