NIGHT cleaners at Harrods called off strike action today after their union United Voices of the World (UVW) said it had resisted reported holiday restrictions.

Concerns had been flagged to the union about holidays being limited to two weeks, which would have affected facilities workers, many of whom hail from Asia and Africa and often save for years to visit their families.

UVW, which represents 95 per cent of cleaners at Harrods, informed the store that workers would be balloted for strike action, which they voted for unanimously.

Workers reported that Harrods has now confirmed that workers can take three weeks’ leave, and has started approving holidays.

Night cleaner Agnelo Fernandes said: “This would have not happened if there was no support for us from UVW.

“The managers wanted to do all that they say, but now they understand the power of our unity, and they have to bow down.”

A Harrods spokesperson said: “Over the past couple of weeks, we have worked closely with our colleagues in the store services division, listening to and addressing their concerns to ensure the best resolution for all involved.”
