VENEZUELAN President Nicolas Maduro hailed the completion of the 3.9 millionth home today in a public housing drive started a decade ago.
“We have managed to decommodify housing and turn it into a human right and not a commodity,” he said as the Bolivarian nation ended 2021 on a high.
The Great Housing Mission was started in 2011 under Mr Maduro’s predecessor, the late Hugo Chavez.
The Venezuelan government has pledged to build five million homes by 2025, although with 500,000 developments completed in 2021, it is on target to exceed that total, Mr Maduro revealed.
The housing project was initially developed to help those affected by heavy rains and floods at the end of 2010 before being extended to the rest of the population.
More than 12 million Venezuelans are believed to have benefited from the initiative, including a woman who hit Mr Maduro over the head with a mango in 2015 while asking him to find her a home.
