THE international community has “so far failed” the people of north-west Syria and they “rightly feel abandoned,” a senior United Nations official has said.

Nearly 36,000 have died in the week since earthquakes hit Turkey and Syria, with the UN warning that the final death toll is likely to be at least double that figure.

UN emergency relief lead Martin Griffiths said today that the rescue phase of operations was “coming to a close” and that the focus would now move to providing support for survivors.
