Italian communist Domenico Losurdo dies

TRIBUTES have been paid to renowned Italian communist intellectual Domenico Losurdo, who has died aged 76 after a short illness.

He was an academic and “revolutionary political militant” who helped found the new Italian Communist Party (PCI) in 2016 and sat on its central committee.

Professor Losurdo was the dean of the faculty of education at the University of Urbino, where he taught philosophy. He was the author of many books, including Liberalism: A Counter-History.

He was known for his powerful critiques of bourgeois ideology. In one of his last public appearances, he addressed a packed audience  on the theme of Marxism and communism at an event to mark the 200th anniversary of Karl Marx’s birth.

The PCI described him as “a companion, friend and one of the greatest cultural figures of our country” and “a leader of our party.”

PCI Ancona secretary Ruggero Giacomini expressed sorrow to his family and spoke of “fraternal closeness in this sad and painful moment.”
