Killings of Palestinians at all-time high as world marks UN day of solidarity

THE International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People was marked around the world today while Israeli killings in the occupied territories are at an all-time high.

Established in 1978, the annual commemoration is sponsored by United Nations educational agency Unesco.

A record total of 140 Palestinians have died this year at the hands of Israeli forces.

The latest killings took place today, when three Palestinian men were fatally shot in two separate incidents in the occupied West Bank, according to Palestinian authorities.

Brothers Jawad Rimawi and Thafer Rimawi were gunned down by Israeli troops in the village of Beit Rima, near Ramallah, reportedly as Palestinians threw stones in protest at an Israeli military operation in the area.

The third victim, Mufeed Ikhlil, was shot in the head by Israeli troops in Beit Ummar, about six miles north of Hebron. Nine other Palestinians were wounded in the incident.

Israel carries out military operations almost every night in the West Bank.

The occupation also restricts the ability of Palestinians to make a living.

On Monday, six Gaza fishermen were arrested and had their two boats confiscated by the Israeli navy.

Fishing union leader Nizar Ayyash said that the men “were working near the Palestinian-Egyptian maritime borders.”

Israel allows Palestinians in the blockaded Gaza Strip to fish only at a distance of 15 nautical miles.

Roughly 50,000 Gazans earn their living through fishing, according to the union.

Former Palestinian peace negotiator Dr Hanan Ashwari said: “Israel killed 206 Palestinians this year, four today [Tuesday], 80,000 since 1967. A massacre in instalments.

“What is solidarity without accountability for the murder machine that is Israel?

“Wake up world!” she added.
