NASUWT employees vote ‘almost unanimously’ for further strikes

GMB members at the union’s regional offices to walk out next week over imposed changes to their pension scheme

EMPLOYEES of teaching union NASUWT have voted “almost unanimously” to take further strike action over imposed changes to their pension scheme.

GMB members at the union’s regional offices will walk out next Monday and Friday, having already done so on October 17.

They say the changes will require them to clock up 45 years of contributions to gain a full half-salary pension.

The GMB complains that, during consultations on the changes, union representatives were not shown vital documents and attempts to suggest improvements to the proposals were blocked.

Organiser Dave Warwick said: “It gives dedicated trade unionists no pleasure to be taking strike action against a sister union.

“However, our members voted on a large turnout, almost unanimously, to strike as all other avenues have been met with deaf ears.”

A NASUWT spokesperson said: “NASUWT regrets that, following an extended process of consultation and negotiation with the recognised staff unions, Unite and GMB, on revisions to the staff pension scheme, the GMB union has now confirmed that it intends to call strike action.

“The NASUWT will make every effort to minimise any disruption caused by the GMB strike action [and] apologises for any inconvenience the GMB action may cause.”
