Women's Football Neville calls on Lionesses to be ‘ruthless’ against Russia

THERE were recalls for Chelsea’s Millie Bright and Man City’s Jill Scott today when Phil Neville named his England squad for next month’s World Cup qualifier against Russia.

The 20-woman squad will be looking to edge a step closer to next year’s tournament, with a win on June 8 moving the Lionesses to 16 points and put their destiny in their own hands.

Arsenal’s Beth Mead keeps her place in the squad, as does Fran Kirby, and Neville expects Russia to focus on England’s attacking prowess.

He said: “This is a great opportunity to take a giant step towards our goal of making it to the finals in France next year.

“We know from recent experience that teams are wary of our attacking threat and we expect Russia to be no different.

“We will have to be ruthless when opportunities come our way but it is important we remain patient, focused and calm until they do.

“Everyone is in positive mood about the challenge ahead and wants to end the season on a high.”

City’s Kiera Walsh, 21, will also travel to Russia, with Neville keen to give more youngsters some experience with the seniors.

“We had a number of players at St George’s Park earlier this week for some extra training and it was good to get a look at some of the younger players who are pushing hard for inclusion in the senior squad.

“We already have a youthful feel but I won’t be afraid to give more a chance next season.”

With Casey Stoney set to take over Manchester United, Neville will be joined in the dugout by England development team coach Rehanne Skinner, as well as Geraint Twose and Mark Mason, the goalkeeper coach who has been with the group since the La Manga camp in January.
