New strikes on the way at Liverpool airport

NEW waves of strikes will hit Liverpool’s John Lennon airport after workers rejected a below-inflation pay increase of 2.2 per cent.

Members of general union GMB will strike on September 13, 19, 24 and 26, and for eight days in October.

About 80 workers in aviation rescue and firefighting services, control room staff, engineering and driver operations and airport bird control are involved in the dispute.

GMB organiser Eddie Parker said: “It’s not surprising GMB members rejected Liverpool Airport Ltd’s new pay offer — because to accept it would mean a real-terms pay cut for them.

“We have informed the company strike action will not be suspended unless a 3.6 per cent increase is offered.

“GMB is more than willing to get round the table and try and reach a deal which will stop industrial action.”
