OAS chief Almagro expelled by his own party over attacks on Venezuela

Uruguay's Frente Amplio says he is colluding with US imperialism – and Uruguayan former president Jose Mujica said he 'formally says goodbye' to former colleague

ORANISATION of American States (OAS) general secretary Luis Almagro has been expelled from his Frente Amplio party in Uruguay over the body’s sustained attacks on Venezuela.

The party accused him of colluding with US imperialism and other reactionary countries in the region who are pressing for regime change in Caracas.

He had previously been suspended by the party because of his interventionist policies towards President Nicolas Maduro and the Venezuelan government.

However recent indications of potential military action by the US with the participation of Colombia and Brazil has led to his expulsion by Uruguay’s ruling party.

Former president of Uruguay Jose Mujica distanced himself from Mr Almagro by saying: “I regret the course you took and I know it is irreversible. That’s why now I formally say goodbye to you.”

The OAS is a Washington-based group that has been branded “colonialist” by Mr Maduro. He has previously called Mr Almagro a traitor and accused him of being a CIA agent and tool of US imperialism.
