Men's Football Ole relishes meeting City in League Cup semi-final

MANCHESTER UNITED manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer admitted he was looking forward to facing the “best team in England” in the semi-final of the League Cup.

The Red Devils booked a date with cross city rivals Manchester City following a 3-0 win over Colchester United in the quarter-finals at Old Trafford on Wednesday night.

Marcus Rashford broke the deadlock six minutes after the break before U’s defender Ryan Jackson bundled a Mason Greenwood cross into his own goal.

Anthony Martial scored United’s third just after the hour mark to secure a semi-final spot for the first time since 2017, the year they went on to lift the trophy under Jose Mourinho.

Pep Guardiola’s side secured their place in the next round with a 3-1 win away at Oxford while Leicester overcame Everton on penalties in the evening’s other game and will play Aston Villa in the rounds other tie.

And having recently beat City on their own patch in the league earlier this month, Solskjaer admitted that result will only give side confidence going into the game.

He said they will be “fantastic days in Manchester. Of course, we do really respect them and, as I said after the derby last time, in my opinion they are the best team in England.

“They can out-football you so we need to get our game heads on and be ready for them again. But we've shown them that we can cause them problems so I think they will be two fantastic games.”

But if United are going to come through a two-legged semi-final to reach Wembley, Solskjaer conceded that he would have to alter his tactics against the Citizens.

“We’ve looked at that game [at Eastlands] and we were very pleased with the result. But there are things we need to do so much better,” said the Norwegian.

“In the first 10 minutes you think we’ve got to just hang in there. We need to stamp our authority more and you won’t beat City twice in a row or three times with the same tactics so we’ll have to do something better.”
