England ease to victory despite USA’s second-half comeback

Hosts were outscored 17-26 in the second half as visitors grew into the game

ENGLAND overcame the USA 43-29 at Twickenham today, weathering a comeback as the visitors scored four second-half tries.

England won with relative ease despite being without their British and Irish Lions contingent, but will want a more assured finish against Canada next weekend as they were outscored in the second half.

Joe Cokanasiga toasted his first Test in 22 months with a smart brace, Marcus Smith capped an assured debut at fly-half with a try, and Sam Underhill, Ollie Lawrence, Jamie Blamire and Harry Randall also crossed for the hosts.

But Jamason Fa’anana-Schultz, Cam Dolan, Hanco Germishuys and Christian Dyer forced scores for the spirited USA.

Head coach Eddie Jones said he was pleased for his players, with 12 new caps among them, as they played in front of fans for the first time since December.

“We got a bit loose,” he admitted. “It was one of those games that opened up in the second half. The USA came at us more as it got loose and the players will learn from that.”
