Football international dead in shipwreck left Pakistan to help disabled son
In this handout photo provided by Pakistan Hockey Federation on Thursday, March 2, 2023, shows women's field hockey player Shahida Raza, in Lahore, Pakistan.

A FOOTBALL and hockey international who died in a migrant shipwreck off Italy had set out from her native Pakistan to find medical treatment for her disabled three-year-old son, her sister and a friend said on Saturday: medics had told her that help overseas could be her only option.

Shahida Raza, from Quetta in south-western Baluchistan province, was one of at least 67 people who drowned when their overcrowded wooden boat broke apart in rough waters in the Ionian Sea off Calabria before dawn last Sunday.

According to survivor accounts, the vessel, which had set out from Izmir in Turkey, had at least 170 passengers before the tragedy happened.
