Coronavirus Olympic officials express confidence in Covid protocols after positive cases

BEIJING Olympic officials have insisted their coronavirus protocols are “under control” despite the announcement by US bobsledder Elana Meyers Taylor on Monday that she has tested positive for the virus.

Meyers Taylor, a medallist at each of the last three Winter Olympics and world number one in both two-woman bob and monobus, made the announcement via social media, and is currently at an isolation facility in Beijing.

The athlete still has a chance of competing in her first event, for which qualification begins on February 10, as she could be released from isolation if she returns two consecutive negative tests within 24 hours.

Huang Chun, deputy director-general of the organising committee’s Pandemic Prevention and Control Office, said: “We’re all very safe and there’s no need to worry.

“We’re not considering major adjustments to countermeasures because we think it’s effective so far.”

As of Monday, there had been a total of 67 positive cases among Olympics-accredited personnel, of which 54 were detected at the airport upon arrival.

British Olympic Association officials confirmed today that there have been no positive cases nor instances of close contacts within their ranks to date.
