LIONEL MESSI edged Robert Lewandowski to win his seventh Ballon d’Or award on Tuesday night, with the Bayern striker finishing second after a flawless season. Many believe he should’ve been entitled to last season’s award, including Messi himself. 

“I’d like to mention Robert, it’s been a real honour to compete with him” Messi read to the audience.

“I think France football should award you your 2020 Ballon d’Or, you deserved it.”
