THE Scottish government’s grant funding of companies arming Israel’s war machine is “morally incoherent,” Oxfam charged today.
The remarks came ahead of a Holyrood vote brought forward by Green Party co-leader Lorna Slater, who has called for a halt of funding to companies arming the Israeli military.
The Green Party argues that more than £1 million has been handed over by Scottish Enterprise since the invasion of Gaza.
Ahead of the debate, Ms Slater said: “Israel’s assault on Gaza is one of the worst war crimes of this century.
“The Israeli government has been condemned by the International Criminal Court and every reputable human rights organisation for the atrocities it has carried out against Palestinians, and now it is working with [US President] Donald Trump to ethnically cleanse Gaza.
“The Scottish government has rightly stood against the genocide, but it continues to give public money to the arms dealers who are directly enabling it.
“It’s time for the Scottish government to put their money where their mouth is and end all subsidies for the war profiteers making such a killing.”
Oxfam Scotland’s Jamie Livingstone said: “The Scottish government’s humanitarian aid to Gaza and its condemnation of war crimes have shown moral leadership, but they’re morally incoherent with bankrolling the very firms enabling them.
“Assurances that public funds aren’t used directly for weapons manufacturing don’t wash when the companies themselves are profiting from this humanitarian catastrophe.
“It’s time for the Scottish government to end public funding for arms firms fuelling the devastation in Gaza.”
A spokesman for the SNP government said: “The Scottish government and its enterprise and skills agencies do not provide funding for the manufacture of munitions.
“Support for defence sector companies is focused on helping firms to diversify their activities.”
