Sport in brief with Jamie J: May 27, 2024

MEN’S BASKETBALL: Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving scored 33 points each as Dallas Mavericks beat Minnesota Timberwolves 116-107 in Dallas this morning to take a commanding 3-0 lead in the NBA’s Western Conference play-off final. Boston Celtics are also 3-0 up on the Indiana Pacers in the Eastern Conference play-off and can claim their place in the grand final when the teams meet in Indiana tomorrow morning.

SPEEDWAY: Birmingham, who currently languish one place off the bottom of the Premiership with just one win all season, have announced the signing of former World Team Cup winner Fredrik Lindgren. The 38-year-old Swede who currently races for Lublin in the Polish Ekstraliga will join the Brummies at the end of June. Lindgren has finished in the top four at Speedway’s individual world championships for the last six years.

WOMEN’S FOOTBALL: Goals from Rachel McLauchan and Lizzie Arnott helped Rangers to a 2-0 win over the part-timers from Hearts in Sunday’s Scottish Cup final at Hampden Park. Victory completed a domestic double for the Gers in manager Jo Potter’s first year in charge, having won the Premier League Cup in March, but they missed out on the League title after finishing as runners-up to Celtic on goal difference.

ICE HOCKEY: Last season’s dominant force in British ice hockey the Sheffield Steelers have received a tough draw in their attempt to become only the second British club to reach the second round of the European Champions Hockey League. The Steelers will face Sweden’s reigning champions Vaxjo Lakers and Skelleftea, Swiss champions Zurich Lions and Fribourg-Gotteron as well as Czechia’s Dynamo Pardubice and Sparta Prague.
