MEN’S RUGBY UNION: Scotland ran in seven tries as they earned a 47-38 bonus point win in their opening Nations Championship game in Argentina on Saturday evening. Earlier Wales saw off Fiji 39-24 in Cardiff, New Zealand edged out France 34-32, Japan brushed aside Italy 27-10 and Tom Clarkson’s late try helped Ireland squeeze past Australia 33-31 in Sydney. World champions South Africa also bagged seven tries as they crushed England 45-21.
SPEEDWAY: Belle Vue’s 17-year-old Will Cairns scored a maximum 15 points to lead Britain’s youthful team into October’s European pairs championship final. Scunthorpe’s British under-19 champion Luke Harrison bagged five points and 16-year-old reserve Cooper Rushen scooped two as Britain finished behind defending champions Denmark. The Danes have won three of the last four finals. Italy also qualified third with Norway in fourth.
MEN’S RUGBY LEAGUE: Winger Thomas Jenkins scored a hat-trick as NRL table-toppers Penrith cruised to a 36-14 win over Sydney Roosters that kept them four points clear of the three teams tied for second place after Newcastle edged out the Dolphins 13-12 on Sunday. Bottom of the pile St George Illawarra beat Wests 24-10 for only their second win of the season, Cronulla won 28-16 at Brisbane and Parramatta saw off Manly 23-14.
MEN’S BOXING: Abdullah Mason remains the youngest current world champion after stopping Albert Bell in the final round of their WBO lightweight title bout in Cleveland early Sunday morning. Mason is now unbeaten in 21 fights. On the undercard Bruce Carringtom made a successful first defence of his WBC featherweight belt, racking up an 18th consecutive win, with a comfortable unanimous points decision over Rene Palacios.
