US air attack on Yemeni capital kills at least six

AN AIR attack by the United States killed at least six people and wounded 26 overnight in the Yemeni capital of Sanaa, authorities said today.

The Houthi-led government also claimed defence forces had shot down another US MQ-9 Reaper drone.

An intense month-long campaign of US air attacks under President Donald Trump, targeting the Yemenis over their attacks on Israeli and US shipping in the Red Sea, has killed over 120 people, according to figures released today by Yemen’s Health Ministry.

The Yemenis say their targeted blockade of the Red Sea is being carried out in solidarity with the Palestinians under attack by Israelis in Gaza.

Yemeni forces have targeted more than 100 merchant ships with missiles and drones and also attacked US military vessels.

Footage aired by the al-Masirah satellite news channel showed firefighters spraying water on a raging fire they described as being sparked by the air strikes.

Rubble littered a street as rescuers carried one person away from what the government claimed was a ceramics factory in Sanaa’s south-western Bani Matar district.

The US has provided no information on the attacks but the White House has said more than 200 strikes have been conducted so far.

Yemen’s military separately claimed on Sunday night that it had shot down yet another MQ-9 Reaper drone over Hajjah governorate, a north-western region bordering the Red Sea and Saudi Arabia.

Spokesman Brigadier General Yahya Saree described the downing, in a pre-recorded video message, as the fourth in two weeks by the rebels.

General Saree said the Houthis targeted the drone with “a locally manufactured missile.”

Reaper drones cost about £23.5 million apiece.

US Central Command said it was aware of reports of the drone being shot down, but did not elaborate.
