US told to ‘return to the Afghan people the money stolen from them’ in UN clashes over aid to Kabul

THE US was warned to “return to the Afghan people the money that has been stolen from them” amid sharp clashes at the UN security council on the eve of the first anniversary of US withdrawal.

The UN called on Monday for $770 million (£650m) to help Afghans through the winter, warning that 19 million are facing acute food insecurity.

Most development aid was withdrawn from Afghanistan following the Taliban takeover, and US President Joe Biden seized $7 billion (£6bn) in frozen Afghan assets, putting half in a UN trust fund and handing the rest in compensation to families of victims of the 9/11 terror attacks.
