Men’s Football Vardy likely to miss return to Fleetwood with Foxes in FA Cup

LEICESTER striker Jamie Vardy is a major doubt for his fairytale return to Fleetwood tomorrow.

The England forward is struggling with a groin injury and is yet to train for the FA Cup third round game at Highbury.

Vardy joined Leicester from Fleetwood for £1 million in 2012 and has become an international as well as winning a shock Premier League title in 2016.

But he is unlikely to make an emotional return to the Cod Army after suffering the injury at Liverpool last weekend.

Boss Claude Puel said: “We will see. If he is not 100 per cent, then we will not risk him.

“He is not training with the team and is just doing some exercises in the gym so, for the moment, it is not good for him.”

Wes Morgan and Danny Simpson are missing with hamstring injuries, but Adrien Silva is expected to start following his delayed debut on New Year’s Day.

The midfielder is now registered after the Foxes missed the deadline by 14 seconds in August as they tried to push through a £22m deal from Sporting Lisbon.

“For Simpson, I don’t know when he can come back into competition,” said Puel. “For now, he is in the gym.

“Wes, I think it is not too bad, but I think he will be out for a few weeks.”

Robert Huth is yet to make an appearance this season after an ankle problem but is close to a return.

Meanwhile, Besiktas are reportedly ready to make an approach for striker Islam Slimani once they sell Cenk Tosun to Everton.

Slimani, Leicester’s £30m record buy has barely featured under Puel but scored as Vardy’s replacement in Monday’s 3-0 win over Huddersfield.

Puel added: “It is important to discuss with all the players. We have a lot of options. We cannot give them all the game-time they want. It is important to have a better balance of the squad.”
