China and Syria vow to strengthen co-operation as they celebrate 65 years of diplomatic relations

CHINA and Syria pledged to strengthen co-operation as they celebrated 65 years of diplomatic relations in Damascus on Sunday evening.

Chinese ambassador to Syria Feng Biao said they would achieve “strategic harmonisation” between Beijing’s ambitious Belt & Road Initiative and Syria’s Heading Towards the East strategy.

The latter, promoted by Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, sees a realignment away from the West and developing relations with both China and Russia, seen as key allies in the reconstruction of the country after more than a decade of war.
