Peru: Judge considering Fujimori’s freedom

Prosecutor says the right-wing candidate failed to abide by the terms of her prison release granted a year-and-a-half ago

AMID uncertainty in Peru following a closely contested presidential election that left-wing candidate Pedro Castillo appears to have narrowly won, a judge is considering right-wing presidential candidate Keiko Fujimori’s freedom.

Prosecutor Jose Domingo Perez has asked a judge to return Ms Fujimori to prison for failing to abide by the terms of her release granted a year-and-a-half ago.

He contends that she spoke to an investigation witness who is also a spokesperson for her campaign.

Ms Fujimori was freed after spending more than a year in jail as part of a probe into millions of dollars in illegal campaign contributions she allegedly received from the Brazilian construction company Odebrecht.

Mr Perez said in March that Ms Fujimori should be jailed for 30 years, along with her husband and 38 other people.

“I trust that the judiciary will not accept the argument for preventive detention made by Prosecutor Perez,” Ms Fujimori said on Saturday.

If the electoral authorities agree with Ms Fujimori’s bid to annul 200,000 votes for Mr Castillo, she would not only win the presidential election but would also be able to freeze her corruption trial for five years.
