Latin American regime change proponents invited to join ‘network of freedom fighters’ in Miami

FAR-RIGHT Venezuelan opposition figure Leopoldo Lopez was invited to join other regime change proponents as part of “a network of freedom fighters” at a gathering in Miami on Wednesday.

The Oslo Freedom Forum, which has its foundations in anti-communist NGOs, held a forum for wannabe leaders hoping to subvert democracy in their countries.

Mr Lopez told New York-based journalist and anti-Iran activist Masih Alinejad that he hoped they could unite their efforts in bringing freedom to their home countries.

“I invite you to work together in a network of freedom fighters, like yourself, in order to bring about freedom in our countries,” Mr Lopez said in a video message posted on Twitter by Ms Alinejad.

He called for people to “raise your enthusiasm, ignite your freedom,” adding: “We can get together, because together we are stronger,” as the pair embraced.

The Venezuelan opposition figure was sentenced to 14 years in prison for his role in a 2014 coup attempt that led to riots in which 43 people were killed.

He is suspected of involvement in attempts to overthrow the democratically elected government of President Nicolas Maduro, including a foiled military incursion from neighbouring Colombia in 2019.

Despite this, he is lauded by Washington-funded human rights groups, including Amnesty International, which labelled him a “prisoner of conscience” when he was behind bars.

Ms Alinjad is producer at the Voice of America, a media organisation deemed a mouthpiece for the US government.

She works for the US Agency for Global Media, a US government organisation which is committed to funding networks of opposition news organisations in places such as Cuba as part of Washington’s regime change operations.

In 2019 she met with then US president Donald Trump and secretary of state Mike Pompeo as the pair were ratcheting up hostilities with Tehran.
