Morales to return to Bolivia after Arce’s inauguration

FORMER Bolivian president Evo Morales is set to return to the Andean country on November 9, the day after president-elect Luis Arce is inaugurated, senator-elect Andronico Rodriguez confirmed on Wednesday.

Mr Morales’ return comes after the Movement Towards Socialism (MAS) swept to a stunning victory in the October 18 poll, a year after a Washington-backed coup.

A Bolivian court has thrown out an arrest warrant on terrorism charges issued against Mr Morales by the coup regime headed by far-right Christian fundamentalist Jeanine Anez after seizing power.

Mr Morales has been living in Argentina, which gave him asylum after he was ousted following false allegations of election irregularities.

Mr Rodriguez told TeleSUR TV that a mass mobilisation would be held to receive “the historic leader” on the “historic day” in Cochabamba.

Mr Arce has already announced plans to mitigate the economic damage caused by the coup regime amid the Covid-19 pandemic, including food vouchers for the country’s poorest and introduction of a new wealth and property tax.

Investigations will also be opened into the massacre of hundreds of indigenous Bolivians in the aftermath of the coup.
