Pope condemns ‘global system of elitism and inequality’ in World Youth Day address

POPE Francis attacked global elites in Lisbon today at an event during the Catholic church’s confusingly named World Youth Day, which lasts a week.

The Argentinian pontiff called on young Catholics to reject the “present global system of elitism and inequality” and “align the tragedy of desertification with that of refugees, the issue of increased migration with that of a declining birth rate.”

The first Catholic supremo from the developing world has become known for his criticisms of modern capitalism and of Western governments, particularly over their treatment of refugees.

His address at Lisbon University followed an initial meeting with 13 victims of clerical sex abuse which kicked off his Portuguese trip for the periodic Catholic festival, which has attracted over 350,000 attendees.

The huge religious get-togethers were founded by Pope John Paul II, who is now widely accused of having ignored evidence of widespread sexual abuse of children by clergy and actively suppressed attempts to investigate leading perpetrators such as Legion of Christ founder Marcial Maciel.
