Saudi air strikes are claiming Yemeni lives almost daily, human rights groups warn

SAUDI ARABIA and its allies are killing Yemeni civilians almost daily in indiscriminate air strikes and other attacks, human rights organisations have warned.

The Humanity Eye Centre for Rights and Development has denounced Saudi artillery strikes on border regions in Sa’ada province, which left one civilian dead and eight others wounded on Friday.

Local sources have also revealed that the Saudi-led coalition targeted areas of Yemen’s al-Hudaydah province with air strikes, violating a ceasefire 77 times in 24 hours today, according to the Mehr news agency.

“Saudi military units target villages, farms and civilian border areas with barrages of artillery rounds on a daily basis,” the Humanity Eye Centre said in a statement.

“The Riyadh regime’s war machine continues to destroy buildings and kill innocent civilians in different parts of Yemen almost every day.

“The latest crime falls within the framework of daily attacks and acts of aggressions that Saudi Arabia … continues to perpetrate against the Yemeni people in various areas of Yemen, and the violations are unfortunately overlooked by the United Nations.”

A recent Oxfam report found that Britain and the United States provided the coalition with the weapons used in hundreds of attacks on Yemeni civilians between January 2021 and this month.

Oxfam arms and conflict policy adviser Martin Butcher said: “Our analysis shows there is a pattern of violence against civilians and all sides in this conflict have not done enough to protect civilian life, which they are obligated to do under international humanitarian law.

“The intensity of these attacks would not have been possible without a ready supply of arms.

“That is why it’s vital the UK government and others must immediately stop the arms sales that are fuelling war in Yemen.”
