Syria accuses US of hypocrisy over claims it defeated Isis

SYRIA accused the United States of hypocrisy today, warning that the US’s attempt to take credit for the defeat of the Islamic State contradicted the reality of its policy on the ground.

Earlier this week, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken issued a joint statement with the Global Coalition to Defeat Daesh/Isis claiming success against the jihadists, insisting we “stand with the Syrian people.”

But the Syrian Foreign Ministry said those that led the defeat of Isis were “the Syrian Arab Army, the Russian forces, the Iraqi army and the fighters against terrorism in the region, not that coalition whose attacks targeted innocent civilians and urban facilities in both Syria and Iraq.”

And it dismissed “hypocritical” claims that the imperialist forces wanted to deliver humanitarian aid to the Syrian people, saying that the US and EU have imposed “unilateral coercive measures that prevent the Syrians from receiving medicine, food and fuel in addition to the United States’ looting Syrian oil and wheat in particular.”

On Tuesday, Information Minister Imad Sarah said that the country faced the additional threat of “media terrorism” against the government to try to turn the Syrian people against it.

But, speaking at the10th Meeting of the General Assembly of the Islamic Radios and Televisions Union in Tehran, Mr Sarah said that this had failed with voters overwhelmingly backing President Bashar al-Assad in May’s election. Critics say the election was not free or fair.

The US has been widely condemned after air strikes in Syria and Iraq earlier this week killed a child along with four anti-Isis fighters from the Iranian Popular Mobilisation Forces (PMF).

The Iraqi government said on Tuesday that it was “studying all legal options” after the attack, branding it a violation of its sovereignty.

The Co-ordination Committee of Iraqi Resistance vowed revenge for the “martyrdom” of the PMF fighters.
