TURKISH police blocked a rally in memory of murdered women in the largely Kurdish city of Diyarbakir today, tearing photographs of the deceased from the hands of protesters.

The demonstration, organised by the Dicle Amed Women’s Platform (DAKP), was surrounded by heavily armed riot police soon after assembling in the city’s Dagkapi Square.

Police snatched pictures of Kurdish revolutionaries Fidan Dogan, Leyla Saylemez and Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) co-founder Sakine Cansiz, who were murdered at a community centre in Paris in January 2013.
