Turkish officials target constructors over earthquake damage as death toll surpasses 33,000
Emergency teams search for people in the rubble of a destroyed building in Adana, southern Turkey, Tuesday, February 7, 2023

TURKISH officials targeted more than 130 people allegedly involved in shoddy and illegal construction today as the death toll from last week’s earthquake passed 33,000.

Survivors, including a pregnant woman and two small children, and bodies were still being found six days after the disaster, with the United Nations warning the number of dead could rise threefold.

The Turkish government turned the blame for not better preparing people in the region, which is located over fault lines, onto contractors.
