BRAZIL: A group of unidentified people attempted to seize the Venezuelan embassy in the Brazilian capital, Venezuelan deputy foreign minister Yvan Gil said today.

“Unidentified persons are invading premises of our embassy in Brasilia. The Brazilian government should provide guarantees [of security] and respect international conventions,” he said.

It is unclear if anyone was injured. The government is yet to comment, but Workers’ Party MP Paulo Pimenta claimed on Twitter that “supporters of [leader of the Venezuelan opposition] Juan Guaido” are behind the attack.

USA: More than 234,000 voters in Wisconsin would be made illegible to vote unless they register again before the next election under a lawsuit filed today.

Conservative law firm the Wisconsin Institute for Law and Liberty alleges that the local Elections Commission broke the law when it decided to wait up to two years to deactivate the voters believed to have moved house.

State law sets a 30-day deadline.

Wisconsin is a key swing state which President Donald Trump won by just 23,000 votes in 2016.

PALESTINE: Palestinian officials today reported that 23 people, including two teenagers and a seven-year-old boy, have been killed in the latest Israeli air strikes in Gaza.

The Israeli military claimed more than 250 rockets have been fired in Israel since the violence erupted following an Israeli air strike that killed a senior Islamic Jihad commander in Gaza on Tuesday.

AUSTRALIA: Scores of wildfires continued to rage across vast tracts of the drought-stricken east coast yesterday, forcing hundreds of residents to evacuate their homes, some for the second time in a week.

The most intense fires were concentrated in Queensland and New South Wales, the latter having lost more than 200 homes since Friday.

Tony Wellington, mayor of the Queensland town of Noosa North Shore, said: “It’s bad enough being evacuated once let alone multiple times,” adding: “It’s terribly distressing.”
