World in brief: July 26, 2023

CHINA: Wang Yi was named as China’s new foreign minister on Tuesday.

The former foreign minister, Qin Gang, has been absent from work “for health reasons” over the last month.

Mr Wang, who previously held the role from 2013 to 2022, filled in for Mr Qin during his absence and represented China earlier this week at a Brics national security advisers meeting in Johannesburg.

UNITED STATES: Dwayne Johnson — aka “the Rock,” star of the Fast and Furious franchise — has made a “seven-figure” financial contribution to the Sag-Aftra Foundation Relief Fund, which provides emergency assistance to union members during strike action.

The donation, reported on Tuesday, came in response to an appeal to the highest-earning actors in the film industry to support their less affluent colleagues during the current strike.

Foundation executive director Cyd Wilson said it was the largest cheque they have ever received and will “help thousands of actors to keep food on their table.”

NIGERIA: Doctors in Nigeria have begun a “total and indefinite strike.”

The doctors are complaining about the failure of the government to improve working conditions, low pay and to tackle the rising cost of living.

According to the Nigerian Medical Association, at least 50 doctors leave Nigeria every week to work abroad because of the country’s failing economy.

CHILE: The national board of the Chilean Teachers’ Association called for a 24-hour national strike on Thursday to demand improvements in education and other demands.

The union is demanding reparations for the state’s historic debt towards teachers during the dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet, when their salaries were reduced.
