WORKERS at the Atomic Weapons Establishment (AWE) warned of a recruitment crisis today as they launched a 24-hour strike after rejecting a 6 per cent pay offer.
Prospect members mounted picket lines outside the site which supports and maintains Britain’s nuclear deterrent in Aldermaston, Berkshire.
General secretary Mike Clancy said they were forced to act after years of stagnating pay and a “disappointing” lack of engagement from bosses who presented their offer as a “done deal.”
“It is simply unbelievable that within the organisation responsible for maintaining our nuclear deterrent people are struggling with the basic cost of living,” he said.
“If the Ministry of Defence and AWE don’t think again and make a pay offer that reflects the still rocketing cost of living, there is a real risk that AWE will struggle to recruit and retain the skills that it needs.”
AWE said it is “disappointed” about the strike, which ends at 7am on Thursday.
