UKRAINE: Officials at the Russian-controlled Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant said that the site had been attacked today by Ukrainian military drones.

Elsewhere, Russian missile strikes killed eight people and wounded 12 more on Saturday and early today.

EUROPEAN UNION: German Chancellor Olaf Scholz warned at the weekend of threats posed by right-wing populists in the run-up to European parliament elections in June.

Addressing a conference European socialists in the Romanian capital Bucharest, the leader of Germany’s Social Democrats said: “Right-wing populists are running election campaigns against our united Europe [and] they stir up sentiment against refugees and minorities.”

Opinion polls indicate a shift to the right in the forthcoming election.

SYRIA: At least seven children died and two people were wounded on Saturday when a roadside bomb went off in an area of the south-west where dozens of incidents have already claimed about 100 lives this year.

A police official in Daraa blamed militants who remain active in the area, but the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights accused a pro-government militia of planting the bomb in an assassination attempt.

CHINA: Visting US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen sent a message of mutual co-operation at a meeting with Chinese Premier Li Qiang today, highlighting improved relations since her visit to China last year while admitting that major differences remain.

“While we have more to do, I believe that over the past year we have put our bilateral relationship on more stable footing,” she said.
