Cuba’s education unions: a sharp contrast to the British experience
GEORGE BUCHANAN reflects on what British teachers learned from their counterparts in Cuba following a study tour to the communist-governed Caribbean country, where unions are at the heart of decision-making

OVER the October half term, from October 21-27, I visited Havana and Pinar Del Rio as part of the NEU and Cuba Solidarity Campaign’s study tour delegation to Cuba.

The delegation comprised of 21 current and former teachers with the brief: “Achieving the UN Millennium Development Goals: what can we learn from Cuba and how can international solidarity help?”

During the visit, the group met with representatives of the Federation of Cuban Women, Institute of Friendship with the Peoples, University Student Federation and a local Committees for the Defence of the Revolution (CDR).
