New cold war undermining the UN, says Guterres as Kissinger meets Xi Jinping in Beijing

A NEW cold war is undermining the basis of the United Nations, the global body’s secretary-general Antonio Guterres warned on Thursday night.

Mr Guterres said that the “post-cold war era” had finished and great power confrontation and geopolitical tension were once again the defining characteristics of the age.

He spoke on the day US centenarian strategist Henry Kissinger met Chinese President Xi Jinping in a meeting billed as a tribute to Sino-US co-operation 52 years after Mr Kissinger negotiated the opening of diplomatic relations between the states.
