Sheffield Council accused of failing to give low-paid cleaners rate for the job
LABOUR councillors in Sheffield have been accused of failing to give low-paid cleaners the rate for the job and face a dispute with general union GMB.
The union accused the council of breaching a national Local Government Pay Agreement by paying the mainly women cleaners 61p an hour less than its own minimum rate.
GMB said the council claimed it did not need to pay the rate because the cleaners were transferred back into direct employment having previously been contracted out to privateers.
