Arab League votes to restore Syrian membership after 12-year ban

SYRIA will rejoin the Arab League, member states agreed today at a summit in Cairo.

The vote came days after diplomats met in Jordan to discuss returning Syria to the Arab fold before Saudi Arabia hosts the upcoming Arab League Summit on May 19.

The country had been suspended from the League for 12 years, after an uprising against the Bashar al-Assad government gained widespread foreign backing, including from League member states Saudi Arabia and Qatar. Qatar did not attend today’s meeting, and continues to fund Syrian insurgents.
