CONSTRUCTION bosses have paid builders so little that the industry body has been forced to increase rates of pay or break minimum wage law, Unite claimed today.
The Construction Industry Joint Council (CIJC) was forced into an emergency increase in the rate paid to general operatives, from £10.26, to £10.40 in order to meet the paltry increase in the minimum wage due to take effect next month, the union said.
Jerry Swain, Unite national officer for construction, said: “The fact that the CIJC has had to increase wages to ensure their rates remain legal is deeply humiliating.
