SERBIA: A pan-European Pride event must be cancelled because authorities can’t protect it from right-wing extremists, President Aleksandar Vucic said on Saturday. Mr Vucic acknowledged it was an infringement of gay rights but said the country was tackling multiple security issues including a Kosovo border question and could not protect the rally. European Pride Organisers president Kristine Garina said the president couldn’t cancel “someone else’s event” and local LGBT activists said they would go to court if police tried to ban it.
ARGENTINA: Thousands of supporters rallied outside Vice-President Cristina Fernandez’s home in Buenos Aires at the weekend, clashing with police who tried to disperse them. At least five officers and four protesters were hurt. Ms Fernandez is awaiting a verdict in a corruption case based on her term as president that she and the government say is politically motivated. Prosecutors have demanded she be jailed for 12 years and banned from politics for life.
COLOMBIA: Police discovered a bomb planted in the Ituango municipality just ahead of a visit by newly elected left President Gustavo Petro. They said the bomb had been safely detonated and the president was never in danger. Mr Petro proceeded with the visit and appealed to all armed groups to participate in a genuine peace process in the country, which has been riven by civil war for five decades.
