Labour's Paulette Hamilton becomes Birmingham's first black MP with by-election win

LABOUR has won the Birmingham Erdington by-election, with Paulette Hamilton becoming the city’s first black MP.

Ms Hamilton, a city councillor and former nurse, increased Labour’s share of the votes cast from 50.3 per cent at the 2019 general election to 55.5 per cent.

Her 9,413 votes to the 6,147 picked up by Tory candidate Robert Alden, who came second, gave Ms Hamilton a majority of 3,266 on a turnout of 27 per cent. There were 10 other candidates, with Dave Nellist for the Trade Union and Socialist Coalition coming in a distant third with 360 votes (2.1 per cent).
