THOUSANDS of jobs are under threat after a winding-up order was filed against Liberty Steel, unions have warned.

HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) issued the petition on Thursday following the collapse of Greensill Capital, the main lender to British businessman Sanjeev Gupta’s GFG Alliance, which includes Liberty.

The order forms part of discussions over how the company’s creditors are to be repaid, which unions fear could force Liberty into insolvency with jobs being axed.
