THE death toll from Haiti’s recent earthquake has hit 2,200, the country’s Civil Protection Agency said today.

The agency said via Twitter that 12,268 people were injured and nearly 53,000 houses were destroyed by the magnitude 7.2 quake on August 14.

Countries from the United States to socialist Cuba and Venezuela have rushed aid to Haiti since the disaster, but authorities are struggling with security at distribution points and gangs have reportedly hijacked deliveries while desperate crowds have fought over bags of food.
