MALAWI: President Peter Mutharika sacked the country’s military chief Gen Vincent Nundwe yesterday after the armed forces protected protesters against his rule as a political crisis deepens.
His re-election in May was overturned after pressure from opposition politicians, but on Tuesday Mr Mutharika refused to sign papers after parliament passed an electoral reform Bill and set a new date for the poll.
Mr Nundwe had won praise for his role in ensuring the army protected people in clashes with police during protests.
