FIGHTING between rival government factions in South Sudan’s capital Juba entered its fifth day yesterday despite United Nations calls for restraint.

Some 30,000 Juba residents were sheltering in the UN base in the Jebel district, where much of the fighting had raged since Friday, when 272 people, including 33 civilians, were killed.

“We urge an end to these hostilities and hope [political leaders] will return back to taking up all the action points of the peace agreement,” said UN mission spokeswoman Shantal Persaud.
