REFUGEES on hunger strike in protest at the closure of European Union borders have agreed to end their action, Serbia said yesterday.
Refugee agency spokesman Ivan Miskovic said authorities will now seek to move the group — around 100 strong — away from the border zone with Hungary, where the strike took place, to asylum centres within Serbia.
The hunger-strikers had marched from Belgrade to the border a week ago to draw attention to the thousands of refugees stuck in limbo in the Balkans following the EU decision to block their main overland route in March. Several have been hospitalised since the hunger strike began.
