Qualifying is a must for the tartan army
But Strachan’s tired team selection might make the job hard, warns ANDREW MUIRHEAD

SCOTLAND will kick off their World Cup qualifying campaign away to Malta tomorrow and once the tournament begins in the summer of 2018, it will be 20 years since Scotland played in a major competition. Qualification is long overdue.

From the original 27 players that manager Gordon Strachan called up, four dropped out including Celtic duo Kieran Tierney and Leigh Griffiths, who were replaced by Tony Watt and Lee Wallace.

But the squad selection was met with bewilderment as the likes of Gordon Greer, Alan Hutton and Steven Fletcher received call-ups once more, despite their poor showing during the Euro qualifiers. While the likes of Graeme Shinnie and Ross McCormack continue to miss out.
